A Life Worth Keeping - The Story of Sadie the Shih-Tzu
Early last fall Animal Adoptions of Flamborough received a call from our veterinarians, asking if someone would take a very sick little dog that was surrendered to them that day.
I got the call from one of our Directors to pick up Sadie. She was nothing more than a skeleton that lay limply in the vets arms. I was so shocked at her appearance that I didn't hear a word the vet said. I could only concentrate on her ribcage, shallow breathing and limpness.
I took her home wrapped in my coat because I couldn't hold her bony frame in my arms without crying. That night I wrapped her in towels to keep her warm and fed her water on the tip of my finger. I rocked her most of the night and thought that any minute now she might die. She could not hold her head up or even cry out.
For the next few days I was given the responsibility of deciding her fate. Was she too sick to go on or was she feisty enough to make it? It was a difficult call at times. All I knew was this feisty little creature had a very strong desire to survive. So, I made the call to try it day by day.
As it turned out she was recovering very quickly from being thirsted and starved close to death. Her kidneys and bowel began acting normally after a month on medication and vet care.
Six months later Sadie is no longer Sad Sadie! She is vibrant, happy, wags her tail every time we enter the room. She is very protective of us and is learning to accept other animals in the same space as she shares in our home.
She now has a perfect little body and a very strong will to survive and loves life. But sadly the abuse left her with delicate feet. She has no cartilage between her bones and it hurts when she walks.
Because she is so strong spirited with an overwhelming desire to survive, she survived terrible abuse that many would not have been able to endure.
And, it's because of this that our organization and veterinarians really want her to enjoy a fuller life that would be possible with a pet wheelchair. So, we are asking for help in raising funds to help Sadie become a real dog for the first time in her little life.
